Spatial Characteristics of Cooperative Interactions in the Striate Cortex

چکیده
We explored how contour information in primary visual cortex might be embedded in the simultaneous activity of multiple cells recorded with a 100-electrode array. Synchronous activity in cat visual cortex was more selective and predictable in discriminating between drifting grating and concentric ring stimuli than changes in firing rate. Synchrony was found even between cells with wholly different orientation preferences when their receptive fields were circularly aligned, and membership in synchronous groups was orientationand curvature-dependent. The existence of synchrony between cocircular cells reinforces its role as a general mechanism for contour integration and shape detection, as predicted by association field concepts. Our data suggest that cortical synchrony results from common and synchronous input from ealier visual areas and that it could serve to shape extrastriate response selectivity.

Binocular spatial phase tuning characteristics of neurons in the macaque striate cortex.
We employed microelectrode recording techniques to study the sensitivity of individual neurons in the striate cortex of anesthetized and paralyzed monkeys to relative interocular image disparities and to determine the effects of basic stimulus parameters on these cortical binocular interactions. The visual stimuli were drifting sine wave gratings. After the optimal stimulus orientation, spatial...
متن کاملBinocular combination of contrast signals by striate cortical neurons in the monkey.
With the use of microelectrode recording techniques, we investigated how the contrast signals from the two eyes are combined in individual cortical neurons in the striate cortex of anesthetized and paralyzed macaque monkeys. For a given neuron, the optimal spatial frequency, orientation, and direction of drift for sine wave grating stimuli were determined for each eye. The cell's disparity tuni...
متن کاملDual Inhibitory Mechanisms for Definition of Receptive Field Characteristics in a Cat Striate Cortex
In single cells of the cat striate cortex, lateral inhibition across orientation and/or spatial frequency is found to enhance pre-existing biases. A contrast-dependent but spatially non-selective inhibitory component is also found. Stimulation with ascending and descending contrasts reveals the latter as a response hysteresis that is sensitive, powerful and rapid, suggesting that it is active i...

In the present study, the cooperative and diminutive interplay between halogen, hydride, and cation-σ interactions are studied in HMgH···Li+(Na+)···NCCl, Li+(Na+)···HMgH···ClCN and HMgH···ClCN···Li+(Na+) complexes by means of ab initio calculations. To better understand the cooperative or diminutive effects in the ternar...
متن کاملAttentional inhibition of visual processing in human striate and extrastriate cortex.
Allocating attention to a spatial location in the visual field is associated with an increase in the cortical response evoked by a stimulus at that location, compared to when the same stimulus is unattended. We used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate attentional modulation of the cortical response to a stimulus probe at an attended location and to multiple probes...
